The contentious ‘Pride Night’ event at Dodger Stadium ended without the anticipated fanfare or controversy.
Despite the uproar around the Dodgers’ recognition of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group known for its colorful and provocative performance art, the ceremony was conducted without any outrageous antics, instead playing out to a barely filled stadium. “There was no strip show performance, no dancing, no twerking on the crucifix, and no rousing ovation by a packed crowd of rainbow-clad LGBT activists,” attendee Peachy Keenan noted.
Counteracting the event, a peaceful protest was held by Catholics at the stadium. Despite the mass turnout, the crowd was “quiet, reverent, and prayerful.” Interestingly, this protest was predominantly attended by the laity, as official representatives from the Los Angeles Archdiocese chose to “remain neutral” and refused to attend.
Adding to the dissenting voices, Catholic media personality Jack Posobiec termed the Sisters as “the Sisters of Demonic Possession,” stirring the crowd with his audacious rhetoric. Yet, even in their denouncement, these speakers emphasized the need for love and prayers for the Sisters and the broader LGBTQ+ community.
In the aftermath, it has been suggested that concerns over possible violence were directed towards potential actions from militant pride activists, rather than the peaceful Catholic protestors. As Keenan writes, “the most terrifying newly minted hate group in America is the militant pride activists.”
