According to two Republican members of the House Ways and Means Committee, Attorney General Merrick Garland and IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel were accused of perjury by two IRS whistleblowers. Representatives Kevin Hern from Oklahoma and Greg Murphy from North Carolina revealed that Gary Shapley and another whistleblower testified for over seven hours before the committee. They emphasized that Garland and Werfel had lied to Congress about political interference in the Biden probe.
Hern highlighted that both Republican and Democrat committee counsel had questioned the whistleblowers. He stated that “Whistleblower Two corroborated Whistleblower One,” supporting the claims made by the first whistleblower.
The IRS tax probe involving Hunter Biden, the son of the president, took a significant turn as Shapley, an IRS inspector with over a decade of experience, alleged that standard investigatory protocols were disregarded by the IRS to benefit Biden. Shapley’s letter to Congress accused Attorney General Garland of lying when he claimed that Biden probes would be free from political interference. Garland denied these allegations, and in April, Werfel assured the Ways and Means Committee that whistleblowers would not face retaliation. However, during the second whistleblower’s interview, they claimed to have experienced retaliation since October 2022.
Murphy firmly stated that Garland had lied to Congress, describing his denial as “false” and “totally false.” The revelations made by the whistleblowers have intensified the scrutiny on the actions of the Attorney General and the IRS Commissioner, adding further complexity to the ongoing investigation.
