New York City (NYC) has created a tent shelter at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens Village designed to accommodate up to 1,000 male immigrants amidst the city’s migrant crisis. Officially opened on August 15, the establishment expected an intake of 100 immigrants on its inaugural day.

Zach Iscol, NYC’s Emergency Management Commissioner, remarked, “I think if you’ve been paying attention to the number of people coming in, 2,000, 2,500 a week… This place will be full very, very quick.”

NYC Mayor Eric Adams has repeatedly urged the Biden administration to provide support, such as expediting work permits for illegal immigrants. He also announced another relief center at Randall’s Island to house 2,000 immigrants.

The newly established site at Creedmoor boasts a primary sleeping tent for up to 850 male illegal immigrants and an auxiliary tent for 150. Dining and restroom facilities are also in place. NYC, at present, shelters over 52,600 individuals and receives thousands of asylum seekers weekly.

Identified as a “sanctuary” jurisdiction, NYC has become a magnet for immigrants over the years. Amid the rising inflow, Mayor Adams’ administration has been scouting for shelter spaces – from hotels to cruise terminals. Still, the surge compelled them to limit incoming numbers and redirect the sheltered immigrants elsewhere. Just last week, the Mayor issued a 60-day notice for adult asylum seekers without children, urging them to locate alternate accommodation, prioritizing families.

Dr. Ted Long, who oversees the migrant shelters, mentioned around 100 migrants have received this notice to date.
