Lionsgate has announced the return of mask mandates to its Santa Monica, California office, based on an internal memo shared with staff, effective immediately. Workers will be mandated to wear masks on specific floors “until further notice,” and affects “nearly half of the company’s employees at its flagship office at 2700 Colorado Ave. in Santa Monica,” as per Deadline Hollywood’s coverage.
Sommer McElroy, the Response Manager for Lionsgate/Starz, specified the requirements: “Employees must wear a medical grade face covering (surgical mask, KN95 or N95) when indoors except when alone in an office with the door closed, actively eating, actively drinking at their desk or workstation, or if they are the only individual present in a large open workspace.”
Beyond the mask mandate, Lionsgate will implement a “building entry policy.” This necessitates that employees undergo daily self-screening before accessing the office. Furthermore, they must promptly notify McElroy about any “new or worsening symptoms” or recent international travels in the past 10 days. The company will also be proactive with contact tracing, alerting “all individuals who have been in close contact with employees who have tested positive for COVID-19.”

Lionsgate has committed to supplying at-home test kits on demand. Additionally, surgical masks and KN95s will be accessible at the entrance, with N95s provided upon specific requests.
The decision to take these stringent measures comes after several Lionsgate employees tested positive for COVID-19, coinciding with a global surge in cases. Fox News contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier mentioned on “Outnumbered” that the current rise in cases aligns with the regular seasonal trend of the virus, and voiced concerns about the resurgence of mask mandates, particularly in the summer cycle.

Saphier remarked, “Those who are immunocompromised should consider wearing a high-quality mask, like an N-95, rather than a basic cloth or surgical mask.” She stressed the inefficacy of the latter, as supported by various studies. But, for the broader public, she emphasized, “we have to move on.”
Prominent media platforms like MSNBC, PBS, and CBS Mornings have recently begun hyping up masks again, with MSNBC discussing the importance of children wearing masks in school, PBS highlighting the use of masks in crowded areas, and CBS Mornings explaining the “Summer COVID Spike” as a result of the general public’s lax attitude towards masking, citing no evidence.
