Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) has launched a congressional investigation into allegations that Special Counsel Jack Smith used underhanded pressure tactics in his pursuit of former President Donald Trump. The investigation is based largely upon accusations made by Stanley Woodward, a lawyer representing a defendant indicted by Smith.
According to the allegations, Jay Bratt, one of Jack Smith’s prosecutors, implied during a meeting with Woodward that the Biden Administration would look more favorably on Woodward’s candidacy for a judgeship if his client cooperated with the Office of the Special Counsel. Woodward represents Walt Nauta, a defendant in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case.

“In November 2022, when your prosecutors were trying to secure the cooperation of Walt Nauta—who is alleged to have ‘move[d] boxes of documents’ at Mar-a-Lago—prosecutors, including Mr. Bratt, summoned Mr. Woodward to a meeting at the Department’s headquarters for ‘an urgent matter that they were reluctant to discuss over the phone,'” Jordan said in the letter.
Woodward responded to these alleged intimidation tactics by cutting off communications with the Department of Justice, stating there would be no further discussions unless Nauta was charged or given an immunity deal. Despite this, it is claimed that Bratt continued to try to induce Nauta’s cooperation by attacking Woodward’s representation.

The letter from Jordan to Smith requests information related to three specific areas regarding Woodward. These include: all documents and communications referring to any appointment, meeting, or visit by Mr. Woodward to the Justice Department concerning the representation of Mr. Nauta; all documents and communications between the Office of the Special Counsel, the Office of the Attorney General, or the Office of the Deputy Attorney General referring to Mr. Woodward; and all documents referring to Mr. Woodward’s application to fill a vacancy on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
