David Ignatius, a top Washington Post columnist and a prominent supporter of President Joe Biden, has called for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

Despite acknowledging what he perceives to be Biden’s successful “battle for the soul of this nation,” Ignatius stated that Biden might not be the best candidate for the Democrats in 2024. He cited concerns about Biden’s age and the unpopularity of Vice President Kamala Harris as potential reasons for Biden to step aside.

Ignatius expressed his belief that neither Biden nor Harris should run for reelection. He said, “It’s painful to say that, given my admiration for much of what they have accomplished. But if he and Harris campaign together in 2024, I think Biden risks undoing his greatest achievement — which was stopping Trump.”

Biden’s age is a significant concern for Ignatius and, according to him, for a substantial portion of the public. He quoted a recent Associated Press-NORC poll stating that “77 percent of the public, including 69 percent of Democrats, think he’s too old to be effective for four more years.”

As for Vice President Harris, Ignatius described her as another “liability” for Biden, warning that replacing her could risk alienating black women voters and potentially fracture the vote in 2024.

Ignatius urged Biden to make his decision quickly, stating, “Time is running out,” and “In a month or so, this decision will be cast in stone.” He warned that the delay might prevent other potential Democratic candidates, including Harris, from testing their mettle in primaries.
