House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has predicted that former President Donald Trump will be the Republican Party’s nominee for the 2024 presidential election.
In an interview with Fox News, McCarthy stated, “President Trump is stronger today than he was in 2016 or 2020, and there’s a reason why”. He attributed this strength to Trump’s achievements during his term, which led to four of the most successful years in U.S. history, according to McCarthy.
McCarthy dismissed the possibility of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) securing the nomination, stating that DeSantis is “not at the same level as President Trump in any shape or form.” He claimed that DeSantis would not have been elected governor of Florida if it were not for Trump’s endorsement.
McCarthy also addressed the potential government shutdown being pushed by DeSantis, suggesting it would only benefit the Democrats. “A shutdown would only give strength to the Democrats. It would give the power to Biden,” he said.
The House Speaker’s predictions are backed by recent polls. According to a Fox News poll, 60 percent of Republican voters support Trump in the primary race, an increase from 53 percent in August. Conversely, DeSantis’ support has decreased, with only 13 percent of voters backing him, a drop of 3 points since the first GOP debate. A FiveThirtyEight poll also showed Trump leading significantly over DeSantis, with 55.5 percent support for Trump compared to DeSantis’ 13.3 percent.
