The House Judiciary Committee has initiated an investigation into Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis due to concerns about her actions tied to her indictment of former President Donald Trump.
On August 14, Willis indicted Trump for purported violations of the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, multiple counts of conspiracy, making false claims, among other allegations, concerning potential interference in Georgia’s election process.
Jim Jordan (R-OH), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, questions Willis’ involvement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in her indictment process. His letter explicitly states, “The committee is probing Willis over whether she coordinated with the Department of Justice when charging Trump.”

Jordan also speculated on the potential political motivations behind the indictment. Notably, a campaign website promoting Willis’ investigation into the ex-president was launched mere days before the charges. Jordan’s letter also brings up other issues, pointing to a grand juror who made media appearances discussing potential charges, and an incident in which the Fulton County clerk’s office posted a document that mirrored the charges issued in the indictment, just hours before the actual indictment was released.
Documents detailing Fulton County’s communications with the DOJ, federal prosecutors, and Executive Branch officials are requested in Jordan’s letter.

According to CNN, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) expressed that state Republicans might also investigate Willis. Greene has been active in urging the congressional committee to inspect the district attorney. She stated, “I’m going to be talking to (House Judiciary Chair) Jim Jordan, (House Oversight Chair) Jamie Comer… on looking at doing an investigation if there is a collaboration or conspiracy between the Department of Justice and Jack Smith’s special counsel’s office with the state DA’s.”
There has been significant online backlash following the indictment leak, with Willis subsequently evading a query, stating she’s “not an expert on clerks’ duties.”
