U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), the second most powerful Republican in the House, has announced that he has been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer, multiple myeloma, which he describes as “very treatable.” Despite the diagnosis, Scalise intends to continue his work in Washington while undergoing treatment.

Scalise said in a statement, “After a few days of not feeling like myself this past week, I had some blood work done. The results uncovered some irregularities and after undergoing additional tests, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a very treatable blood cancer.” He added that he is thankful for the early detection of the cancer and believes that with God’s help and the support of his family, friends, colleagues, and constituents, he will tackle this challenge with strength and energy.

This isn’t the first time Scalise has faced a major health challenge. In June 2017, he was critically injured when a gunman opened fire during a practice for the annual congressional baseball game. Scalise was one of five people shot and did not return to the House floor until September of that year.

Following his announcement, fellow politicians sent well-wishes and expressed their confidence in Scalise’s resilience. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA) commented, “My family and I are praying for Majority Leader [Scalise] and wish him a speedy recovery. He is no stranger to fighting and winning battles of all kinds. I’m confident that he will win this one, too.”

House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY), also lauded Scalise for his toughness and kindness, stating that they were proud to support him in this new challenge.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) issued a similar statement after speaking with Scalise: “Steve is a dear friend, and anyone who knows him knows he’s a faith-filled fighter who can overcome any obstacle that stands in his way. I spoke with him today and he’s in good spirits, as nothing—not a gunshot and certainly not cancer—will stop him from accomplishing what he sets his mind to.”
