Tim Hernandez, a former teacher from Colorado known for his Marxist beliefs, has been elected to fill an open seat in the state’s House of Representatives. This follows a selection by a committee of Democrats after the incumbent, Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez, was elected to the Denver City Council. Hernandez’s election is noteworthy given his previous calls for a “FORCEFUL Cultural Revolution” against “Whiteness.”
Hernandez has a history in education, having previously worked at Denver’s North High School. His contract with Denver Public Schools was not renewed last year, leading to student walkouts in protest. Despite being labeled as “divisive and disruptive” by his school’s leadership, Hernandez found a new teaching position in the Aurora Public Schools District.
In addition to his teaching career, Hernandez has been vocal about his political beliefs. He has been quoted as saying “I want to tear some s**t up for you. Are you ready?” during a protest organized by unions. He also emphasized the importance of turning theory into practice, encouraging his followers to take their beliefs to the streets, their workplaces, and their families.
Hernandez has also been active on social media, using his platform to challenge white supremacy and advocate for a cultural revolution. In a post from 2021, he wrote: “If white people spent HALF of the time they spend trying to distance themselves from their whiteness and instead spent it actually deconstructing systems of white supremacy, where would we be?”
His posts often stress the importance of both individual and systemic change in tackling white supremacy. He has explicitly supported the idea of a “FORCEFUL cultural revolution” that prioritizes the dignity of all lives over the upholding of white supremacy.
