Republican Sen. Mitt Romney (UT) has declared that he will not be running for re-election in 2024.
In his announcement video, Romney said, “The next generation of leaders must take America to the next stage of global leadership. While I’m not running for re-election, I’m not retiring from the fight.” He emphasized the need for a new generation of leaders, criticizing politicians who stay in office into their advanced age.

Romney, who would be in his mid-80s by the end of another term, argued that it’s time for younger leaders to shape the world they will live in. He also took the opportunity to critique both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump regarding what he perceives as inadequate responses to China, the federal debt, and climate change.
In his tenure, Romney was the only Republican senator to vote to impeach Trump in both impeachment trials. After his announcement, he urged both Biden and Trump to step aside and allow others the chance to lead the country.
Romney also criticized many Republicans for their public defense of Trump despite private criticisms, suggesting that they were more interested in maintaining political power than upholding the Constitution. Despite his criticisms, Romney expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Utah and the country, saying, “It really is a profound honor to serve Utah and the country, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so.”
Following Romney’s announcement, Trump mocked him in a post on Truth Social, stating, “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA,THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION. A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
