Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has suspended his 2024 presidential campaign after failing to qualify for the first Republican National Committee (RNC) debate.

Suarez entered the crowded GOP primary field in mid-June but did not meet the RNC’s criteria for participation in the debate. Despite ending his bid for the White House, Suarez pledged to support the eventual Republican nominee in his or her effort to defeat the Biden administration in the 2024 election.

Suarez stated on Twitter, “While I have decided to suspend my campaign for President, my commitment to making this a better nation for every American remains. I look forward to keeping in touch with the other Republican presidential candidates and doing what I can to make sure our party puts forward a strong nominee who can inspire and unify the country, renew Americans’ trust in our institutions and in each other, and win.”

The RNC’s debate criteria required candidates to meet a unique donor threshold of 40,000, satisfy certain polling benchmarks, and sign a loyalty pledge to support the eventual nominee. Suarez, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, conservative radio personality Larry Elder, and Michigan businessman Perry Johnson failed to meet the RNC’s polling requirement.

Suarez had previously suggested that candidates unable to qualify for the first debate should withdraw from the primary. His suspension of his campaign comes in line with this view, and further narrows the Republican primary field.
